Georgian Sheep May Lose Export Potential because of High Prices, say Experts

The Georgian Shepherd Association says Georgian has exported 45 to 50 000 sheep since January 1, 2010.

Beka Gonashvili, the association chairman, told GBC the period of August to December is considered to be a season for sheep exports.

Gonashvili says the figure may considerably increase until 2011, but the current prices are very high and the Georgian sheep may lose the export potential. The period of Ramadan is a proof to this.

“This period records rise in the sheep exports, despite the figure shrank this year”, Gonashvili noted and added the price should be affordable and reasonable to retain the potential client.

At this stage, the Georgian sheep price makes up 140 GEL.

In 2009 Georgia exported 266 244 sheep.
